92 / Habit 2019 Santa Ynez Valley Rosé

Jeff Fischer sourced this wine from two vineyards in 20198: Demetria, in Santa Ynez, and Vogelzang in Happy Canyon. It’s yin and yang in the glass, the Demetria contribution feeling cool and citrusy, with scents of grapefruit and pink flower, while Vogelzang brings a warmer feel, juicy and mouthfilling, with a dense, focused structure.

“Actor and voice talent Jeff Fischer (“American Dad”) just finished harvesting the 12th vintage of his Santa Barbara County-made Habit Wine. 'I make wines for people to enjoy: they are serious, but not meant to be elitist.'"

"The Cabernet Franc is one of my favorite wines in the range, as it is again in 2018. Jeff Fisher simply has a magic touch with Franc."

"Organic and biodynamically farmed in the Santa Ynez Valley, the 2018 rosé is light and bright, the perfect pairing for chilled seafood, charcuterie and cheeses, even sushi. Fans include Sandra Bullock, Chris Noth, Sarah Wayne Callies, Holt McCallany, Aaron Kaplan, writer-producer Nahnatchka Khan and director Joe Russo, who says he is Habit’s “most loyal customer."

"This is a positively stellar set of new releases from proprietor Jeff Fischer. The wines are done in a minimalist style that emphasizes freshness and energy."

"You might know him as the voice of interplanetary stoner boyfriend extraordinaire Jeff Fischer on TV’s American Dad, but the real Jeff Fischer is a vineyard living, grape picking, seriously committed winemaker."

Jeff Fischer of Habit Wine and American Dad: The Sprudge Wine Interview

"The Essential—and Affordable!—Rosés We'll Be Drinking This Fall"

by Chris Hughes

“93 Points -...It's hard to resist a wine that captures the sun and delivers its energy in the glass, glowing red.”

"What's wrong with rosé wines, and why you should never pay more than $25 for a bottle."

by Patrick Comiskey

"...this Loire Valley-inspired Cabernet Franc has pretty floral scents of lavender and Earl Grey tea, with juicy fruit flavors of raspberry and red cherry, and a driving, mouthwatering acidity."

“This captures the dark, bold character of Santa Rita Hills pinot noir in a trim form, its black plum and savory beetroot flavors lasting in a texture that's tense and compact.”

"Jeff Fischer was thrown into a tractor beam and forced to face the trickery of Emperor Zing; Jeff Fischer just wants to make you tasty wine."

"Heady bright, fresh fruit steeped in licorice, tapenade, and lovely Loire funk translating directly into the mouth, where tart candy and floral reign supreme into the delicate tannins."

"The sweet (ripe fruit) and savory coexist here in such a way that it's an almost universal accompaniment to your daily dining table. I turned to the back label: 13.1 percent alcohol. It told me everything I needed to know about graceful pinot noir. Another glass, please."

• Habit Tasting Notes •

The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc McGinley Vineyard is bright, focused and nuanced. 89
The 2015 Chenin Blanc Jurassic Park Vineyard is rich, ample and generous. 88
The 2015 Grüner Veltliner Rancho Arroyo Perdido is the most precise and brilliant of the Habit whites. 91
The 2014 Pinot Noir La Encantada Vineyard is gorgeous. 92
Another delicious wine, the 2014 Cabernet Franc is gorgeous and super-expressive from the outset. 92
The 2013 Red Wine, Habit's Cabernet Franc-dominated blend, is fabulous. 93

"This is a fabulous set of wines from Habit and proprietor Jeff Fischer. Native fermentations, aging on the lees, manual punchdowns and low levels of new oak are some of the stylistic choices that allow the flavors to emerge with striking purity in these delicious, incredibly pleasing wines."

"(Habit's Chenin) is firm and quite dry without becoming in the least bit austere, and it is ideally balanced to be a winning companion to buttery sautéed sole, sand dabs or cracked crab. "

"Jeff Fischer's frisky white has a lingering scent of white flower petals and a hint of peach. The flavors are more citrusy and stony, bone dry with some breadth coming from aging on lees.

"From Gruner Veltliner to Pinot and even a Bordeaux blend, everything I tasted had finesse and approachability. And, coming from a down-to-earth celebrity whose enthusiasm for wine translates into the wine he produces? I'm sold."

"Here is another aromatic grape that dislikes oak and really gains something from prolonged contact with the yeast after fermentation; the twin secrets of Jeff's distinctive wine style."

"Packs a serious punch but comes off as lithe and nervy, with no excess fat. Finishes long and sweet, with supple tannins coming in late and adding shape."

"A half-dozen or so small producers buy chenin blanc from Jurassic Park, including Leo Steen, Habit, Birichino, Lo-Fi and Field Recordings"

"Jeff Fischer is a winemaker. Jeff Fischer is an actor. Jeff Fischer is a character on American Dad! All three of these Fischers are the same man.”

"What started out as a garagiste project has morphed into annually producing several thousand cases of wine. Mr. Fischer, though, is probably different than most winemakers: He only makes wines that he likes to drink - and hopes that others share his disposition. What a concept!"

2012 Habit Dry Farmed Santa Ynez Valley Grüner Veltliner
“Aged in steel and perhaps a bit sweeter and less savoury,
it's just right for chicken with grilled peaches."

"...Jeff Fischer and his Habit label makes habit-forming wines, from a Chenin Blanc that will make you rethink how complex yet drinkable that varietal can be to a La Encatada Vineyard pinot noir he aptly described as "feminine and ethereal."

"He's making the wine of the future." ~ Rajat Paar

Top 100 Wines of 2013 - by Jon Bonné
DECEMBER 2013

2011 Habit Sauvignon Blanc :
"Habit's sauv is completely different than the grassy, bitingly-herbaceous varieties that usually come out of California or New Zealand. His version showcases tropical fruit flavors with the faintest hint of spice. What really makes it special, though, is that it's aged on the lees in steel tanks, resulting in a crisp yet round mouthfeel that goes perfectly with oysters on the half shell or grilled fish. It's done in what he refers to as a Loire-style, French-driven wine. Whatever it is, we're digging it."

“Maybe because I’m too new at the wine business, I just make what I like—a totally dry chenin, Old-World–driven in style. But the reaction was incredible. Sommeliers really get it when they taste it.” ~ Jeff Fischer

2008 Habit Red :
"I must say that I think he has another hit on his hands with this one. The wine is fleshy, rich and layered with a fine tannin structure and velvety texture. It has a classic elements of a meritage blend: iron-rich structure of Cabernet, the softening effect of Merlot, the complex earthiness of Cab Franc and the density of Petit Verdot.

I'm looking forward to the wine being released and getting it on my wine lists asap. I know I'm going to have a hard time keeping it in stock myself."

Habit Wine Dinner at The Salon:

"On Wednesday night the Salon hosted a wine dinner featuring Jeff Fischer's Habit Wines. The Habit dinner included...Chenin Blanc, Gruner Veltliner, Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux Blend.

Habit is a small-batch love affair between Fischer and his grapes, and his wines can be found at a number of fine restaurants around town..."

Habit's sauvignon blanc is quickly gaining acclaim in sommelier circles as a nuanced, sophisticated-yet-friendly wine that marries hints of pineapple, grass and grapefruit with a delicately floral nose.

2010 Habit Sauvignon Blanc :
"Habit's Sauvignon Blanc is a delicious wine. Aged on its lees, this is a more lush expression of the grape, its prototypical brash brightness rounded ever so slightly."

JUNE 2011

2009 Habit Sauvignon Blanc :
"From the moment I smelled the wine, I was hooked. The catch word for this wine is restraint. On its nose, savory dill and tarragon blend with aromas of citrus and passionfruit. All of the typical sauvignon blanc notes are present, but in such an unusually quiet way.

The scents in the glass tease and tempt, rather than knock you down as so many other sauvignon blancs do. The palate reflects the same elegance with crisp citrus and tropical notes and delicate, clean acidity."
